“The world has a lot of noise and complexity and I try to cut through that.”
– Chris Day
As we go through a second set of national Covid restrictions I continue to support local and small businesses by giving them a mention on my blog. Next up: The Silver Hedgehog spoke to renowned local designer Chris Day…
Hi Chris, welcome to the Silver Hedgehog. I first became aware of your work via some postcards in Lichfield Cathedral.
For those who don’t know what you do, tell us a little bit about yourself…
Hi Hedgehog. Great you spotted my work, thank you for inviting me onto the blog. I am a freelance designer helping small and medium sized businesses with marketing. I have lived in Lichfield all my life.
Ohh so the postcards I have seen are not your main business?
The marketing work I do with businesses is my core activity, my minimal artwork is my passion project!
So what exactly is a marketer and how can you help small to medium businesses?

Can you tell us about any local companies you have worked for?
Lichfield is a fantastic place to work, we have many great businesses.
I help regular clients with marketing; G-Scapes, Heart of the Country and Interior Choice. I am always open to helping other businesses
Have you always been in marketing and design?
Following in my mum’s footsteps, I’ve had a passion for design since I was young. Around the age of 14 I started to take it more seriously. Once I had finished my BA Hons degree, I worked The Co-operative and then Creed, a design studio in Leicester. Over a period of 3 years I designing over 700 artworks for leading restaurant brand – Pizza Express, including local restaurants in Tamworth, Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham and Leicester Square. 4 years ago I decided to go freelance and set my own studio up here in Lichfield.
How did the work with Lichfield Cathedral come about?
When I decided to go freelance I started to attend art fayres and outdoor events. Just by chance, whilst setting up my stall outside the Deanery, Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield, stopped by to introduce himself. After a short conversation and after a couple of meetings, I started working with the team at Lichfield Cathedral and help with their marketing. A brilliant 18 month contract, especially in the early stages of my business.

One thing that strikes me is that your designs feature a particular style, what do you use for inspiration?
One of my key aims is to reduce complexity. I cut through the clutter with a simple and pragmatic style. I am influenced by many elements, from nature to architecture and music to fashion, forever holding on to my childlike curiosity of the world around me

Have you had any commissions from any famous clients?
I have been commissioned by lots of well-known brands;
Disney, Mazda, The Co-operative, Wagamama, PizzaExpress
but no one famous ….(yet)
Do you sell your artwork privately?
Yes, on my online shop.
Do you see yourself branching into other products?
Maybe – there’s always more products I am working on
Ok Chris, one final question… How can people get in touch or buy from you.
Thank you for your time Chris. I look forward to seeing more of your work and hope that anyone looking for marketing reading the blog gets in touch with you.
A pleasure – thanks for getting in touch
